Optics beyond the diffraction limit

چکیده

In this lecture, we introduce the basic concepts of near-field optics using two different points of view: the plane-wave angular spectrum and the electric-dipole radiation. The first approach leads naturally to the diffraction limit and to the concepts of evanescent waves and near field. The second approach shows that the basic laws of electromagnetic radiation also lead to the classical resolution limit, and allows to introduce the near-field concept based on the quasi-static approximation. In the last part, we discuss the problem of the fluorescence of a single atom close to a nano-object, based on a simple classical model. This is a key issue in nano-optics, and some important features are put forward, using the tools and ideas introduced in the section devoted to dipole radiation.

Obtaining Circularly Polarized Optical Spots beyond the Diffraction Limit Using Plasmonic Nano-Antennas

With advances in nanotechnology, emerging plasmonic nano-optical applications, such as all-optical magnetic recording, require circularly-polarized electromagnetic radiation beyond the diffraction limit. In this study, a plasmonic cross-dipole nano-antenna is investigated to obtain a circularly polarized near-field optical spot with a size smaller than the diffraction limit of light. The perfor...

Focusing of light beyond the diffraction limit of half the wavelength.

The diffraction limit sets the smallest achievable linewidth at half the wavelength. With a subwavelength plasmonic lens allowing one to reduce the diffraction via an asymmetry and to generate and squeeze the wave functions, an incident light is focused by the aperture to a single line with its width smaller than the limited value in the intermediate zone. The focused fields are capable of prop...

Restoration of optical objects using regularization.

Using the regularization theory for improperly posed problems, we discuss object restoration beyond the diffraction limit in the presence of noise. Only the case of one-dimensional coherent objects is considered. We focus attention n the estimation of the error on the restored objects, and we show that, in most realistic cases, it is at best proportional to an inverse power of |In epsilon|, whe...
